BORDER TERRIer

Border terrier is one of the easiest breeds to learn, it's zero scissor, just all off. Everyone can learn it and with the right tools and our video tutorials, you will be able to groom your border at home without any problems.

CARDING - Removing undercoat
Border has low and very functional undercoat, so it's not necessary to remove it so much like by breeds with rich undercoat. Though when new coats starts growing, carding will help growing harder and stronger cover hair.
If the coat is lone and ready for stripping, it's smart to get a good helper - our TWIN KING, they don't cut cover coat, but will shorten your grooming time to half.
TWIN KING 2in1 -
https://groomerdk.store/Twin-King-2in1-c35312357
Start with the coarse side with less blades and always leave a little hair in the blades - it takes much easier. When the Twin king doesn't take anymore, you can move on to pulling the hair. Right time for pulling hte hair is, when you take a few hair into fingers and pull and they go off without big effort of pulling - then they are ready to go. In lenght it's about 5 cms and more.
For middle harsh and harsh coat is smart to work with as carding tool RETRO SET - https://groomerdk.store/RETRO-EDITION-SET-p212622263
Very universal and effective is also our CLASSIC FINE, but it's bigger tool and if you have smaller hands or are beginner, the retro would be a better choice.
Here you can see on our educational video, how you work with with RETRO SET for carding

Grooming process

  • start with Twin king 2in1 and remove all lose hair, until it's not taking anymore. We recomand leaving some hairs in the blades, it takes better. Start with the side where are less blades and then afterward switch to the fine side.
  • you will need 1 effective knife for the body and 1 detailer for ears and face. If you take the diamond set - you have all in one set. If you need more effective tools and you love to work with knives - take the classic set, they are the most effective and will cover all needs for such a type of coat.
  • for pulling the hair - follow our edicational video below
  • if you are TOTAL BEGINNER and not sure on your technique, add to your grooming tools collection one of our diamond knives - the SHORTY will do great job for the start - https://groomerdk.store/DIAMOND-EDITION-STRIPPING-STONE-SHORTY-p444883921 and add the little detailing knife from DIAMOND SET https://groomerdk.store/DIAMOND-EDITION-CARDING-KNIFE-p139758831
  • if you follow our video and start pulling with a knife - we recommend using medium or coarse knife first and then aftwards clean with the FINE, for very wire coats with low undercoat is important to use very dulled tools - there the diamonds are eminent. For soft coats is better to use little sharper knives, like rainbow or classic.
  • you can also use stones - but they are little clumsy for the details on ears etc, though eminent for body. A lot of breeders will say, they just use fingers for all, honestly - in 21st century we developed tools, which are not cutting and are saving your time and hands. It just takes much too long time and your fingers hurt, we tried it all :) With the right tools and good spirit, I can do a border over all in 1hour.

Two very important tutorials - showing you the correct work with pulling hair. On the first you can see the DIAMOND coarse - so easy to use, everyone, really everyone can learn it :)

In principe all our knives will work great and many breeders and groomers have different opinions about tools, it also depends on size of your hands. If you have big hands, the Classic or Rainbow set is perfect choice, if you have smaller hands or arthritis, the little diamond carding knife is very good tool both for pulling and carding. If you need very light tool, the ergo set is great for that. Anyway the retro set is extremely popular and universal tool. Here on a video you can follow a little about tools:

Recommended tools for a BORDER TERRIER

Brushes and combs - well, there is not so much to comb or brush on a border. You need boar bristle brush and 1 small comb - we rocmmend our teflon coated comb and the boar bristle brush for massage of skin and dust cleaning.

CARDING and preparing for handstripping - Twin king is definitely a great product, impressive helper, which doesn't cut cover coat. We recommend the plastic handle if you have just one or two dogs to work with, also the blades on plastic Twin king are a little closer than on profi steel Twin king. The profi tool will keep forever and if you have a salon or more dogs to groom, also if your dog has really very thick coat - take the profi, the blades are the same, but we placed them little closer on the plastic handle. Usally the small profi would be fine for a border, but if you have a big boy over 38cm in shoulders, the big profi twin king will save you a lot of work.
As carding knife - most universal is CLASSIC FINE and RETRO FINE, for heavy coat with a lot of undercoat, the RAINBOW FINE will be a good offer. But as said above, low undercoat is not necessary to remove on longer coats, they need their undercoat for thermoregulation.

HANDSTRIPPING - tools for pulling the hair can really spread into many different types. We will try here to make the choice easiest for you:

STRIPPING INTO UNDERCOAT EVERY 6 months - BEGINNER - if you are completely beginner, we would recommend simple set - TWIN KING, DIAMOND SET and DIAMOND SHORTY, then of course brushes and combs mentioned above. You can always upgrade with more knives, if you decide to do rolled coat or are more secured in the technique. The retro set is very intuitive and of course DULLED, so it won't harm the cover coat. If you have a dog with very heavy undercoat and soft cover coat, go for the rainbow set with slant teeth - they are better grabbing softer coat and go deeper than straight teeth. Though they have to carry a little more sharpness, so very wire coat may break as the slant teeth will push the coat too much to side while carding. But they are dulled and work really great on heavy coat. If you want effective tool for bigger hands, the CLASSIC set will do great job as well.

ROLLED COAT - if you like to work with rolling, you need a lot of discipline, but the result is great. You have dog in top coat whole year out. We have several good rollers - especially RETRO EXTRA COARSE and CLASSIC COARSE. You will have to take with light hand every second week or every 10 days, always smooth after with a stone to get off forgotten long hairs.
