miniature schnauzer

Miniature schnauzer is a very impressive breed while groomed correctly and can be really ruined in look by bad grooming. We will try to guide you to make the very best from you Miniature Schnauzer. The coat on a Miniature Schnauzer has often pretty high and rich undercoat - compared to terriers for example, who have more low undercoat. Therefor CARDING (removing undercoat) is an important part of grooming your Miniature Schnauzer.

CARDING - Removing undercoat
Before you start with handstripping and pulling hair, you should clean undercoat, especially on softer coats. For this process we highly recommend those tools:
TWIN KING 2in1 -

For middle harsh and harsh coat RETRO SET - https://groomerdk.store/RETRO-EDITION-SET-p212622263
For very soft coat RETRO FINE or RAINBOW FINE - https://groomerdk.store/Danish-RAINBOW-edition-knife-FINE-p140057526

Very universal and effective is also our CLASSIC FINE, but it's bigger tool and if you have smaller hands or are beginner, the retro would be a better choice.
Here you can see on our educational video, how you work with with RETRO SET for carding

Grooming process

  • start with Twin king 2in1 and remove all lose hair, until it's not taking anymore. We recomand leaving some hairs in the blades, it takes better. Start with the side where are less blades and then afterward switch to the fine side.
  • if the coat is too long, don't do carding with the knife and move on to pulling the hair. Carding is best on a coat under 4 cm, especially for short coats.
  • for pulling the hair - follow our edicational video below
  • if you are TOTAL BEGINNER and not sure on your technique, add to your grooming tools collection one of our diamond knives - the SHORTY will do great job for the start - https://groomerdk.store/DIAMOND-EDITION-STRIPPING-STONE-SHORTY-p444883921
  • if you follow our video and start pulling with a knife - we recommend using medium or coarse knife first and then aftwards clean with the FINE, for very wire coats with low undercoat is important to use very dulled tools - there the diamonds are eminent. For soft coats is better to use little sharper knives, like rainbow or classic.
In principe all our knives will work on a miniature schnauzer and many breeders and groomers have different opinions about tools, it also depends on size of your hands. If you have big hands, the Classic or Rainbow set is perfect choice, if you have smaller hands or arthritis, the little diamond carding knife is very good tool both for pulling and carding. If you need very light tool, the ergo set is great for that. Anyway the retro set is extremely popular and universal tool. Here on a video you can follow a little about tools:

Recommended tools for a miniature schnauzer

Brushes and combs - the 3d extra long pins is very good for thick coat on legs, softer furnishing and rich beard, middle harsh coat is fitting best to Volumizer medium brush and very wire coat with low undercoat is best to use the boar bristle brush, which is also very good to massage skin and release more lanoline. From combs - the teflon coated comb small is good for beard and legs combing, if you prefer handle on your comb, the double pins bamboo comb is a perfect choice. If you have a dog easy to tangle, with soft furnishings - the smart comb with rectractable pins will help you a lot to keep the coat free from mats.

CARDING and preparing for handstripping - Twin king is definitely a great product, impressive helper, which doesn't cut cover coat. We recommend the plastic handle if you have just one or two dogs to work with, also the blades on plastic Twin king are a little closer than on profi steel Twin king. The profi tool will keep forever and if you have a salon or more dogs to groom, also if your dog has really very thick coat - take the profi, the blades are the same, but we placed them little closer on the plastic handle. Usally the small profi would be fine for a MS, but if you have a big boy over 36cm in shoulders, the big profi twin king will save you a lot of work.
As carding knife - most universal is CLASSIC FINE and RETRO FINE, for heavy mixed coat with a lot of undercoat, the RAINBOW FINE will be a good offer.

HANDSTRIPPING - tools for pulling the hair can really spread into many different types. We will try here to make the choice easiest for you:

STRIPPING INTO UNDERCOAT EVERY 6 months - BEGINNER - if you are completely beginner, we would recommend simple set - TWIN KING, RETRO SET of 2 and DIAMOND SHORTY, then of course brushes and combs mentioned above. You can always upgrade with more knives, if you decide to do rolled coat or are more secured in the technique. The retro set is very intuitive and of course DULLED, so it won't harm the cover coat. You can also take the diamond set alone - but we don't recommend it, if your dog has very mixed coat with a lot of undercoat. If the undercoat isn't cleaned out, the diamond is getting less effective and you will fight hard with it. It's eminent on cleaned coat or really harsh coat with low undercoat. If you have a dog with very heavy undercoat and soft cover coat, go for the rainbow set with slant teeth - they are better grabbing softer coat and go deeper than straight teeth. Though they have to carry a little more sharpness, so very wire coat may break as the sland teeth will push the coat too much to side while carding. But they are dulled and work really great on heavy coat. If you want effective tool for bigger hands, the CLASSIC set will do grat job as well.

ROLLED COAT - if you like to work with rolling, you need a lot of discipline, but the result is great. You have dog in top coat whole year out. We have several good rollers - especially RETRO EXTRA COARSE and CLASSIC COARSE. You will have to take with light hand every second week or every 10 days, always smooth after with a stone to get off forgotten long hairs.
